Latest on Armstead...possibly good news:
The MRI will tell all...
Cameron Wolfe
@CameronWolfe
Dolphins LT Terron Armstead texted me “I’ll be good” a few minutes ago.
Armstead will get a MRI to be 100% certain. But it sounds like good news for Armstead, one of Miami’s best players, after practice injury scare.

Sounds like Tua was excellent today, but the media won't mention that.

Whatever do you mean? The media always reports the good things in Tua!

I heard Tua had a great practice session today and that he may get a series on Saturday. His family is at the practice. Mom and Pop need to come more often so Tua plays up!

That's the way this offense is designed - same as the offense of the 49ers and Rams. But Tua has absolutely shown that he can go through his progressions when he has time.
IMHO, every QB reads pre snap and checks off before the snap based on defensive alignment right? As the ball is snapped qb's make quicker decisions based on the pre snap read correct? As the play develops and players become open there is a 'SPOT' on the field where the QB anticipates the WR will turn and catch the ball right?
In fairness isn't that all QB's in the league in a nutshell? But, Not every QB in the NFL led the entire league in Passer Rating did they?

I like the idea of Tua getting some preseason reps. He needs to take a couple of hits and shake the rust off.
Re: Training Camp News and Notes 2023
Definitely. A good Tua showing will help the team immeasurably IMO.
Armstead is great but injury-prone. Always has been.
I suspect having him limp through the season is the best the Phins can hope for.
Armstead at 80-90% is still better than anyone else the Phins have sad to say.
LT and Oline is a major need for the Phins IMO. Too bad Grier does not see it that way.

You're more right than you know. I've discussed Approximate Value here before. An AV rating of 7-8 for a season is average, and a rating of 9-10 is above average.
Armstead is the first Fins O-lineman to be considered by PFR (and likely almost all DolFans) to be above average in EIGHT YEARS And since players only accumulate AV by actually playing, he surely would've gotten a 10--only Tua, Waddle and Hill had double digit AVs for this team last season--had he managed to stay healthy for every game.
https://stathead.com/tiny/Rp1ZJ
Then again Armstead has literally never played a full season in his 10-year career, which is why he's never had a single season AV of more than 11 even though he's widely recognized as a top OT.

Re: Training Camp News and Notes 2023
Yes, I suspect Armstead will be less than 100% all season. That's just the way it is.
I do, however, think the Phins have much more talent on the OL than most people seem to think. The trio of Armstead, Williams and Hunt is a very good start - and add in a healthy and improving Jackson, and LG becomes the only true question mark. And even there, Wynn, Jones, Eich and Cotton are fighting for that spot and all have played good/very good all summer.
Hayes seems like a solid developmental tackle prospect, Lamm has looked good and is locked in as the swing tackle, Feeney is a solid vet that can play all 3 interior positions, Uluave is challenging for the #2 center job as a rookie. Overall, I like the mix of older and younger linemen, and I think there's a lot more talent there than they get credit for. I feel like we actually have quality depth for the first time in a long time, and younger linemen are actually starting to develop.
I am going to start a thread about who will make the final roster on the OL...definitely the most intriguing storyline in preseason for me.

Re: Training Camp News and Notes 2023
Great news on Armstead.
He reported on Twitter someone fell on him on that running play, so not a "non contact injury" or his leg just giving out or something.
I still don't like the teams approach of signing injury prone players at core positions on the team. Linebacker or running back, even receiver or TE is one thing. Let's not sign injury prone CBs, OTs, etc...

More good news on Armstead:
Cameron Wolfe
@CameronWolfe
Dolphins LT Terron Armstead was watching practice today without a walking boot or wrapping on foot/ankle. Walking well, trending toward his goal of being ready for Week 1.

Matt Infante
@MattInfante
Cam Smith practicing today without the red jersey is best news of the day. He appears to be easily the top boundary option when Kohou has to move inside.

Barry Jackson
@flasportsbuzz
Dolphins sign linebacker AJ Johnson and waive LB Mike Rose and safety Myles Dorn. Johnson is established player, with 34 NFL starts; played for Fangio in Denver. Has 252 career tackles, 4.5 sacks, one pick, 4 forced fumbles, 2 recoveries. Interesting addition

Could be nice LB depth...his familiarity with Fangio's defense could give him an edge in making the final 53.

Sounds like Tua was on fire in today's practice!
All I've heard all camp is how he has been absolutely lethal in the red zone...can't wait to see him replicate that in the regular season!

Re: Training Camp News and Notes 2023
Rose was the LB who got moved out of his zone position by the QB's eyes in the Houston game. The TE drifted right in behind him and caught a pass.
Any news on Nelson? I was hoping he would continue to stand out in the preseason but I did not notice him in the Houston game?

Nelson seems destined for the practice squad IMO. But it does seem like he is worth at leaast trying to develop. His style of play reminds me of Van Ginkle.
